A little more in depth on the shading and how to draw the hair itself >.<

Tips. (this is how i do it)

Hair falls over the shape of the head and generally goes in the same direction, so a helpful tip is to draw the hair coming from a point. (check bottom pictures ) The point can depend on were the parting of the hair is, but it usually goes at the top of the head. You can use a separate one for the fringe.

Remember to apply gravity (for straight or more realistic hair). The hair will drape over the top of the head and where it comes off the back, it will hang.

Different hair types will act differently, In anime/manga alot of the hair seems to defy gravity, so to keep it looking like hair remember to still make it follow the contours of the head.

For the shading just use common sense, shade where the light hits the hair, and shadow where the hair lies against skin or underneath bangs, behind the neck ...etc. Best to look at real hair since it will show the shape of the head best >.<

Male and female hair are exactly the same, they just generally have different hair styles.

Also, I apologize!
Here's the link to Paint.NET

There's also GIMP:

And FireAlpaca:

Everyone is different with what type of program works best for them. Try giving all of those a shot and see which one you like best!

I'm not the poster of this art but I might be able to help you out.

Scan it, or take a good-quality picture of it with a camera, and put it on your computer. Crop the unneeded accessories out, and open your picture in Adobe Photoshop CS2+ or Paint Tool Sai.*

*These tools work the best for lineart and drawing; however, you can download Paint.NET and use it. Link to that is here: I do believe there's also a free version of Paint Tool Sai, but with limited access to its features, but don't quote me on that.

It's also best to have a pen tablet, such as a Bamboo Wacom Capture ($100), or a Bamboo Wacom Create ($200). There's also an Intuos 4, but that's $300 - 400. It's possible to line artwork without a pen tablet and just your mouse, but that will require a bit more skill and patience.

With a tablet, all you have to do is outline your picture (IN A NEW LAYER!) to the best of your abilities, which is a lot easier since it's closer to inking on a regular piece of paper. If you're just using a mouse, however, try Googling and/or Deviantart searching "How to use the pen tool in Photoshop CS2+" That will teach you how to properly use the pen tool and make your lines nice and smooth.

I hope this made some sense to you. n_n Take my advice with a grain of salt, though; it's just coming from a girl who had been linearting with her mouse and the Photoshop pen tool until she got her very first tablet last week! Good luck and happing drawing!
