I started this journal because I had been dissatisfied with my art skills so since May 28, 2011, I've been on the hunt for material to help me out. PLEASE NOTE: This journal gets UPDATED! So check back every few months or so for anything new! And if you find something useful, please suggest it! If you have your own collection of resource links, please share them!

Interested in Dreamworks? Lighting ResourceSo I attended a talk by Bert Poole - He's currently serving as a CG Supervisor on their new movie "The Croods" scheduled for release in March 2013. His most recent movie, you all know of is How to Train Your Dragon, where he was also a CG Supervisor. If you don't know what that means, that means he worked on lighting C: What I'm putting below is from notes I took during his lecture.
His job is to take the directors vision and make the movie look like it. He's making compositions and helping the story to better read. If you've ever talked to me on DA for three or more posts, you might have heard me blab about my major and what I'd like to do. I'd like to do into Lighting, animation second. I just don't feel my skills are as suited for animation, even though I really enjoy it.
Before they start lighting, they work on color Keys
Color Keys are painted works that are used to indicate:
time of day
mood
Key/Fill ratio
Key/Fill color
Hard/Soft light
Atmosphere

Quick Tips: On Referencing AnatomyReference from real life whenever possible.
When you reference or copy from another artist's studies/sketches/art, you may be copying their mistakes as well. Furthermore, an artist's studies are their notes and --just like with history or chemistry notes-- copying someone else's notes will not help you fully understand the material. To completely understand anatomy, you must take your own notes and build your own understanding through observation.
This is probably a no-brainer for many artists but... ~scruffynerfherder and I were talking about this last night, and with the increase of "anatomy studies" showing up on dA's front page, it's been on my mind. DA's resource category has some great material, but I also feel like there is a lot of misleading information taught by amateurs who really probably shouldn't be teaching things like shading or anatomy, because they have a less-than-stellar grasp on it themselves. Canvas sizes - inches and dpi and pixelsThis is a sort of guide on canvas sizes, inches, dpi and pixel x pixels.
when it came to canvas sizes, I always kind of assumed that inches belonged with dpi and pixels were just pixels and that everyone knew that; but i read a whole bunch of comments on a tumblr blog where someone asked about canvas sizes, and SO MANY people were replying with things such as, "4000x4000 px at 300 dpi" or "2000x2000 px at 200dpi".
and I guess not everyone quite understands what dpi's really used for xD.
DPI = Dots per Inch. It means how many dots will be printed per inch.
DPI is actually used for printing purposes. It shows the printer how much pixels to print per inch, literally. A common printer (at home or even at a lot of printing stores) at best prints at 150dpi most of the time actually; there are some super duper great printers that can print REALLY fine that can go up to ...apparently a lot more xD; #dpi, so that's why everyone usually suggests saving your project at 300dpi; most printers are f

Know your Basics - PerspectivePerspective comes in different forms, the most obvious & basic of which is the use of the word in relation to the appearance of relative orientation in a three dimensional space. At first, it may seem irrelevant to photomanipulators, (because, hey, the photographs already are perspectively sound,) but putting more than one photograph in context requires that you learn to see what makes sense and what doesn't.

Hiya, everyone!

All of us have heard about feedback events during our time on deviantArt. Many of us have participated in them, while others have declined to do so for various reasons. Some of these reasons include fear of receiving critique on one's own work, fear of being attacked for critiquing someone's work, fear of not knowing what to say, and feeling inadequate to critique a deviation from someone who is perhaps more skilled than we are--especially if the deviation is created using a medium to which we are unaccustomed.
We especially want to focus on this last reason.
Here is a conversation that we had recently in a dA chat room (names have been changed):
Us: We are planning a cross-medium, dA-wide critique event for Project Educate!! Will you participate?

PE: Anthro Art TutorialsOn today's Project Educate Article on Anthro, I'll be highlighting some great tutorials on how to draw Anthro. Sense there is no right or wrong as far as drawing Anthro, because lets face it, we don't see a werewolf running around to reference from, your imagination is the limit. However, there are some simply guidelines that you can take home with you and practice to better your creativity.
Anatomy
This is probably one of the most challenging things for people to adhere to. Anatomy in itself is a little challenging but once you get it, the sky's the limit as far as drawing Anthropomorphic animals, beings and things!
So below are a few pointers!
1. The Ultimate Anthro Tutorial - This tutorial was created for all beginners and Art enthusiasts around the world. It has such detail and walks you through all the basics before getting to the next level where you feel comfortable drawing anatomy for an Anthro character.

Gesture/pose drawing for beginners!Hey guys!
I got a lot of emails after the last poll about gesture drawing. So I want to recommend one of the best book about it and a few helpful sites.
There are plenty of publications about body drawing. Some are worse than others. But one definitely amazed me! It is Mastering Drawing the Human Figure From Life, Memory, Imagination by Jack Faragasso. Perfectly explains the proportions and shapes. Friendly for beginners and advanced! I often use it. You can buy it online or look for pdf form.
If you want to try a gesture drawing ( wikipedia: typical situations involve an artist drawing a series of poses taken by a model in a short amount of time, often as little as 30 seconds, or as long as 2 minutes ) - I think there are three useful sites:

We hear and see things like this all the time and people with the middle to high range art skills know these comments are just not true. As author Geoff Colvin says in his book by the same title, "Talent is overrated," and really it is. There is no such thing as one person being born super talented and another having none at all or other such myths in art like that. The only difference between you the beginner artist and that artist way up at the top is hard work, smart work and time.
One major study (listed in 'Talent Is Overrated') showed that there was no such thing as the ‘talented’ elite who hardly work and just come out on top. It was found that there was no such thing as the person who just worked super hard consistently

How to win at deviantART: ExposeddeviantART is a categories game.
According to deviantART's hq, "deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results (ie. front page) is known as Fair Exposure. The goal is to maximize the display of the most popular deviations in a variety of topics…with Fair Exposure, the community is exposed to a varied cross-section of deviantART. "
What this boils down to is that certain art categories have inherent ranking advantages and others inherent ranking disadvantages on front page as a means of ensuring that a variety of works from across deviantART are visible on front page and not just that of one category. Sounds pretty good right?
Well let me say before I continue that I do not know deviantART's actual mathematical algorithm for front page ranking. However, I think that anyone who notices the composition of front pages (whether 8 hour or 24, main or by category) and the statistics of the pieces that populate those fronts pages can give you a pretty good guess.

Also found some resources. Lots of people ask me where I get my brushed and tones and what not..I don't actually remember where I got the tones since I got them 3-4 years ago and I make my own Photoshop brushes but I did find some cool stuff while browsing for new stuff.
