My artwork and sharing it?

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 16, 2012, 7:29 PM

Over time I have slowly changed my views about my artwork and how I protect it. If anyone has been watching me for the past year or so they would have seen my ranting journals about people using my art without my permission. I know people can get up in arms when their stuff is used off site whether its for commercial purposes or none-commercial purposes. I just want to say I no longer mind if my artwork is shared, edited and uploaded offsite. As long as no one uses it for commercial gain or claims they made it themselves I don't mind at all. I am not even asking for credit ( though I would appreciate it). I am just happy in the knowledge people think it is worth sharing =) if people enjoy it then that is more than good enough for me.

I am also giving permission for anyone to copy, trace, reference my art and upload it here if they want, just don't save my own picture and re-upload it, there is little point having duplicates on DA. If you are going to put a traced/copied/referenced image of mine on DA, in this case a credit would be nice. My tutorial/ drawing practice sheets are also/ and have always been free to share without crediting me because I made them as practice and to share what I knew with others.

I am just saying this because I get a few notes every now and then from concerned deviants asking me if I have allowed my stuff to be uploaded offsite. I really appreciate people looking out for me and my artwork =) so a big thankyou to all those who are keeping an eye out for artists.

All I ask is if you see my stuff being used commercially, just send me a note and I will sort it out.

(edit* this doesn't apply for commission works since they belong to other people, if you want to use a work that has been commissioned, just ask the commissioner first =) )

So using your artwork for postbackground templates such as: [link] would be fine too? I've always loved your artwork but hate stealing art and never picked up the nerve to ask for permission //shy.

Though I'd still give credit even with permission / your new terms 'coz that's just how I role. XD

Meh, I don't see the harm in people redrawing images or using parts of them. I think its one of those things where you just have to step back once in a while and let people enjoy your stuff whether you are getting credit or not. at the end of the day its just nice to see people think its worth sharing :iconhappytearplz:

I will admit i use some of your finer pieces to trace, and study on how you approach drawing.
I don't post anything though.
As my name states, I just follow people.
(: to study, & what not.

I usually don't ask if it's just going to be on my computer and no one else is going to see it >.< though I know a few people who would be mad about that.
I do ask if I am going to use a lineart of their work though, even though it will never be on DA or used for anything other than my own personal pleasure. I like taking pictures and doing them on claybords, and freely admit that I view this as stealing their art. I do still get nervous asking people though XD I'm always like 'it's not going anywhere I swear! I suck at art, so no one will see it! really!' LOL

I usually never put watermarks or anything on my artworks, because I thought that if someone stole it and presented it as their own, I'll still know that I was the one who put it up first. I won't really care. The date uploaded on the deviation says all. ;)

I love what you said here. It sounds similar to my philosophy. I'm a little more easy-going but that's my fallacy.

I appreciate your art and I do learn from it though I comment little. I take note of your style and technique. I haven't used anything of yours in content but I observe often. You have had a natural talent for transposing photo-realism from the beginning but over the years I've watched your creative ability develop and it has been astounding to me. I think you used to mention wanting to improve your creative process to be on par or close to your photo-realism ability. You have certainly come a long ways towards that end.

You are an active member who puts your ideas out there for all to see. You give fresh insight into art, internet/forums, and produce fresh works very regularly. You're open-minded and ask for outside opinions through polls and discussions and work along side other rising stars and non-stars alike. You are an invaluable individual in this community.

It's an outright opportunity to be able to view your work and share with others. Thank you Moni.

Lol! I really don't mind people using my stuff as long as they don't claim they did it themselves. For example someone uploading a picture they like to a forum or image collecting site. I really don't mind =)

Though I guess it's a good thing that you've decided not to mind, I don't think it would be wise to let others trace or copy off of your work without the need to link back or point out that it wasn't made by them 100%. I mean, yes, it's a hassle to have to go through all the trouble to get someone to credit you or something and I don't think you would bother doing it anymore 'cause, well, yeah, it's a hassle. But maybe just ask for credit even if you don't mind them tracing/copying because chances are, there's a possibility they'd start to mislead people into thinking that they made it by their own artistic ability and I doubt anyone would be pleased to find out they've been watching tracers the whole time. I'm not saying that you should track down every tracer or anything, just mentioning it in the journal might be enough...?

Also, it just bothers me thinking that others would see this as an excuse to trace. There's a possibility they'll start relying too heavily on tracing your work that it might affect their growth in art.

Idk lmfao I'm not ordering you to do anything though, this is just stating my opinion and stuff. :'D

I'm glad to know we share the same opinion (for the first paragraph). I'd like for people to put the credits but most of times that won't happen, so when I see my works around without them I either ask them or just shrug.
Copying, tracing, referencing it's another thing though. :XD:
