SOPA and PIPA update

Journal Entry: Fri Dec 23, 2011, 5:53 PM

I haven't made any updates on the SOPA and PIPA bill lately.

I have found few videos that puts things into perspective.  :bulletgreen: watch here www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhwuXN…

I am very wary of this other video people have been linking me, Very big claims, if they are true I will rage so hard..... :bulletgreen: Watch here www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJIuYg…
(The guy who did the first video linked did a response to this second video :bulletgreen: watch here www.youtube.com/watch?v=HriNzs… )

Also Ashton Kutcher made a blog about SOPA and PIPA too? check it here. aplusk.posterous.com/87693122

Looool if it passes... just use this addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef…

"It's because of the mentality that everybody thinks SOPA won't pass that no one does anything to stop and this is probably how SOPA may be passed. Even if you don't think it will pass, make some contribution to prevent the law from passing so that at least you have done something instead of just letting someone else fight it for you." ~GlassJewel

Maybe THIS aught to bring to light something that's rather devious..............

If it is true............. but the evidence is convincing

I posted a news article a little while back, based on this same issue and some of the problems along with it. [link] . It was hot for a few days, then quietly disappeared into yesterday's news. There's a lot of great comments and actual discussion through out it's comments, but if you read through all the comments you'll also see a lot of apathy, a lot of "the government won't allow it, so I'm not worried", a lot of "If it passes, I'll protest", and a lot of "This is just paranoid talk. It won't happen."
It seems common through a lot of articles about issues like this. Scary, though, is the fact that we've heard that all before. It's a shame that so many people sill sit back and say "It won't happen because it's not right" and truly believe it. That is exactly how bodies in power bring unpopular bills into effect: they either bundle them into bills that people do want, or they just wait out the storm. Each day that passes, more and more people assume this topic is dead, more people fall into a false sense of security, and less people pay attention to the issues at hand concerning this. Eventually, as new topics dominate the news, this will be brought back to the surface and may even be passed with very few watchdogs even noticing.
"It's because of the mentality that everybody thinks SOPA won't pass that no one does anything to stop and this is probably how SOPA may be passed. Even if you don't think it will pass, make some contribution to prevent the law from passing so that at least you have done something instead of just letting someone else fight it for you." ~GlassJewel" is absolutely right. And thank you for bringing this topic back into the attention once again.

Well, sort of. They actually helped write it, because they got themselves a special exemption to it based on their business classification.

Their withdrawal of support is just a hollow P.R. move.

This is so true. If we don't do anything, nothing will change, regardless of how slim the chance of this bill being passed. They caught us off-guard, and now they're one step closer to control the Internet.

:T aaaaaaaaaaaaaah... ... ... okay. It has potential to affect foreign countries (seeing how my country tends to abuse its powers - and this would be a very VERY encompassing power), but okay.

Since the internet got widespread, we got the ability to talk to other people from all over the world. It also allowed us to keep in contact between each other, learn new things but also, it allowed us to keep up to speed with current happenings as well as tell each other about how underhanded things really are in this world.

Especially, we are more and more aware about the seeping corruption that is happening around us all. Not just in the US, but also around the world in general. We realise that people that have real power (eg. tons of money) are able to corrupt and control people that are supposedly in power. These things are really happening and things like SOPA are the proof that these "special interests" and their actions are real and are getting known to the general public, which makes them anxious. After all, knowledge is one thing those interests don't want you to have.

I don't believe I'm pulling these statements out of my ass, because we have things like SOPA that came into existence. I'm sure there are other bills and similar things happening as well. Maybe for a psychological effect, maybe to have leverage to act in force. I don't think anyone knows yet. But it just seems that everything is going towards a certain direction. Some people want to get more and more control over us. (those people must be mentally ill imo, probably either some sort of psychopathy, paranoia, extreme greed or something for them to go to such extent to try and push this kind of bill through).

Looking at all of this, it makes me a bit afraid. Knowing that these dangerous men want to gain total control over entire aspects of our lives, all for money's sake, and perhaps because they love to be in total control.

I think that SOPA will eventually pass into law, as far as politicians are concerned (I watched US congress discussing about it, and from what I remembered, and what I understood (lol) the results weren't good (for us)). So, special interests will probably keep pushing it through by lobbying. Just a couple of briefcases from the corporations that will benefit from SOPA, and the politicians will ignore most, if not all, of our pleas and they will pass the bill through their "machine". I have no faith in these people, not when someone can slip cash in their pockets.

Only hope I have is that the US Supreme Court would make the bill void due to it being unconstitutional. My hope in that is slim though, because even those people can be bought out.

I believe that if it goes to law, people will fight back. I just wonder how far special interests can push people until it gets ugly. Occupy Wall Street is a preamble to this I believe.

So, now what?

I'd imagine it would not pass solely on the actions of the Judicial Court. It's kind of ... idk, their sole reason to exist is to declare something unconstitutional as unconstitutional. The Patriot Act barely went thru, and if this is worse than that, then how can the courts Not shoot it down? Pay the third major branch of the US government not to do anything?

...Well. >_> I won't say it's impossible. But it'd be more likely to pass if somehow the proponents caused a US Reichtag fire or something and pinned it on hackers or Iran or some bunk.

I concur, however, that being complacent in the idea that it won't pass is dangerous. How many times have we heard that quote used... what was it...

Evil only triumphs if good people do nothing? yeh, I think that was it.

It still feels like if the severity of the fears surrounding these bills (Surely, this wouldn't be the last, like sharks testing the waters) comes to pass, it would be the straw breaking the camel's back. I Hope anyways, people would tolerate it no further.

I honestly really don't think It'll pass. Of course when it does, you can all go "I told you so!" Actually, you can't. Because any website to do that will most likely be gone :|
And that is the exact reason I don't think it will. It was unreasonable to begin with. Since it is effecting the whole worlds internet, not just America, it could create some major problems. It'll be world war 3 on the internet, I tell you.
Also, messing with the world wide web can effect the Governments in other countries, just saying.
Further more, hacker groups will probably be even more furious, I can imagine attacks on the US Government if it passes.
It like dominos, really.
Is this making sense?
I do not think it will pass because of how overly unreasonable it is, and all the effects that will follow.
But then again, if it does, you still can't say "I told you so!"

I highly doubt it's ever going to get passed. Besides, everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that right now it's only in CONGRESS. There's still two more houses to go through before it reaches the White House and the president. So even if Congress decides to put it through, that doesn't immediately mean the internet is shut down. It just means that one house has approved it. Besides, anybody can see how ludicrous the idea is. When the plan makes it to the House of Legislation, THEN will be the time to panic.

Err... "Congress" does refer to both houses... the House of Representatives and the Senate... what is this "House of Legislation" you speak of?

"Besides, anybody can see how ludicrous the idea is."

But we're talking about 535 people -- most of them from a generation where the concept of "internet" hardly even existed -- who lack even the common sense to realize that compromise is the only way to get anything done (ie. those big government shutdown scares). So trying to get these people to understand the true ramifications of such a vague, broadly-worded law... I don't see it happening. orz

The easiest way to keep track of both of them is to go to the Library of Congress website.

SOPA: [link]
PIPA: [link]

The last thing I'd heard on it was that Congress' markup session was on hold until the new year, and that a lot of backers are now pulling their support from both bills.

I'm so over these government a-holes thinking that the more they limit people the better places will get, have they learned nothing some of the other idiotic laws they've passed? And some good laws they haven't passed? What I'd love to know is why it is that they're SO concerned about turning the internet into a tiny cube of space where mindless drones swarm in, and yet they don't seem to do anything about all the child killers out there or the animal abusers or the major problums in the social work issues  I mean really.... have they NOTHING better to do?
