I joined at age twelve, because I already knew how to stay safe on the internet--and I knew my parents didn't really mind. The worst things on here are usually censored, which I think is great. But sadly--most people don't censor stuff that they should. Which isn't so great. Young me learned quite a few new things due to uncensored Fan-Fics and such. (But I'm a normal, healthy person now. So it didn't scar me for life or anything. xD I would have just learned it all from the kids in school, anyways.)

So, I don't recommend joining below thirteen unless you're already pretty aware of the kind of stuff you might see/hear. I think that dA has a nice community, depending on who you hang out with. The staff is helpful, and it's just a really great 'site for artists everywhere. I definitely encourage people to join, but I wouldn't want--let's say--my brothers joining before they were thirteen. I don't want to be held responsible when they stumble across something uncensored. :iconsweatdropplz:

I honestly think it should be lower. A couple of years ago, when I was 11, I had a best friend who was 9 at the time. She was actually much more mature than I was, and I was already very mature. I agree with the person who said that there should be a 50 day watch-over by an admin, though maybe not that long; 25-30 days would yeald the same result.

I know this is a pretty old poll, but the age limit is fine, even though I know I could be suspended RIGHT NOW until I'm 13 because I'm still 12. Well, my 13th birthday is on Dec. 15, but still. When I look back on when I joined, I think I was mature and sensible enough for the site's standards. Though I'm not a terribly active member... Heh...

Well, I guess 13 is fair.
We don't need it higher, because that'd be ridiculous and we can't have it lower because little kids will see what they aren't supposed to see :P

Any age - but I saw this comment made by WarriorcatsandPonies Bullet; Blue ~Bullet; Blue I believe that if you enter your age on the dA signup form as under 13, instead of completely not allowing you to register they should give you a 50-day maturity test where you will be watched closely by admins (they will not inform you of this, so you won't even know it's a test and you won't fake your maturity). To pass, you must not steal art, you can't lie and you can't make immature comments. Stealing art, lying and making immature comments will cause you to fail the test.

I agree so much! Please someone tell this to the admins! I really like this idea! I need at least 12 people to help me!!!! I think it's fine the way it is, but I voted lower on personal preference. Different people start to mature at different ages, and at 12/13 I myself know it's wrong to steal art or troll. It depends, but 13 is the general age for maturity...
(also, I'm always the last person in my year to have their birthday, so I guess I'm just jealous of all people who could get accounts before me Sweating a little...  Do you know how long I waited to be old enough to have an account?! It was torture!)

If she's mature enough, don't bother. If you're a young artist, it might help to be around art a lot to inspire a person to be a great artist.

I think 13 is fine, its an age where you should start to mature if you haven't already, and some things you find just trolling around can force that maturation.

I never knew there was an age limit for DA!! After I saw this; however, I don't really mind on what people vote for!
The only thing that DOES annoy me is that there is even an age limit for DeviantART, PERIOD!
It shouldn't matter on what age the artist is! There is no such thing as being to young for art!!
I mean; I joined DeviantART at the age of 13 about 4 months ago; and NOW look at me!!

16 watchers
Over 2,250 page views
156 Deviations
A total of 596 favourites on ALL my Deviations

All of that gained within 4 months!! People like my art because it is just that; ART! They don't care about my age; often people don't even NOTICE how old the artist is until after they've seen the art! So; I personally believe that DeviantART should just make it that ANYONE at ANY AGE can join DA!

I gained 46 watchers, 1,043 pageviews, 45 deviations and I dont really count my favorites in one month.

Which just proves how much they care for the person who takes pictures of sucky art with the lowest quality camera (tablet) ever.

I think people underestimate younger Artists, Not all of them steal art.
Some just make mistakes but as soon that you tell them it's wrong they don't do it again.
Some just like to piss off people and do it for fun.
Some are just interested in art and don't want to mess with anybody, but they still get judged.
There are a lot of personalities, people, characters, you don't know them all.

Thirteen is a tad low for me, just because you can encounter some pretty twisted/dark/smutty stuff on here by accident. I wouldn't want my thirteen-year-old brother on here, that's for sure. I'd put it at fifteen. By that age the majority of people have either established their limits or are mature enough to handle with caution.

that is why we have mature content censoring, if they happen to fall upon twisted/dark/smutty stuff, that's the artist to blame. All the really bad stuff should be 18+

When I was 11, I showed above-average skill in art for my generation. I tried to make a Deviantart account, but COPPA wouldn't let me. I know some of you might say "But underage people are more likely to steal art!". But, really... some young artists have great potential. It is sad that they cannot express themselves because of a simple law. Copy and paste this if you think the minimum age should be lowered!

I've been reading these comments, and although I do realize some young people take art and say it's theres, not all of them do. You don't need to be bashing the younger generation just because of some of the idiotic young 'artists' you see. Some of the younger artists show great potential. I voted lower.

it doesn't matter if you're slightly younger, especially if you're still honest/mature, unless if you're one of those retarded 8 year olds that steal work.

I think it's fine the way it is.

I mean, I'm not saying that the younger people aren't sometimes the cause of art theft or simply just annoying the crap out of the rest of us, but they shouldn't be rejected just for that.
I joined only a year ago, and I was 14.
The changes that are obvious in my art and my general attitude is amazing to me. I don't know if it's because I'm simply at that age, or recent things have forced me to grow up quickly, but whatever it is, it's astonishing. Being on here has helped that in ways you couldn't imagine. I look back to my old "art" and can honestly tell you that I'm not proud of it. It's poorly done, generic, and horribly shallow-minded.
And now I think I've become more open to things, because people gave me a chance. I wasn't instantly rejected or laughed at, but given the oppurtunity to grow as a person and artist. I still have a long way to go, but I will say that I am proud of how much I've changed because of dA.

I find it very ironic that a specific someone who commented they want a higher age limit on this poll is the source of many stupid, immature news articles about people stealing their art or rants about how they don't like what someone said and cursing in them. |:I

I was very surprised to find that a majority of the people who took the poll did not know that dA had an age limit. Does anyone read the fine print anymore? I was 17 when I first joined dA but I remember the age limit being around 13 or 15.
Honestly I think the age limit should be higher because sadly, dA is turning a little bit on the mature side. Yeah Yeah, censorship comes in for those who are under 18. But still there is art on dA that is not flagged as mature and goes unnoticed. My boyfriends little sister is on dA and I'm very careful about what I post or say on dA.
