I think if it's on the internet, it's now free for me. Music, movies, tv, programs, pictures, everything. I respect an artists work of course and would never claim something as my own.

I mostly copy manga and when i'm done reading it and i like it, I go and order me the whole series. Same applies to movies but when I'm done watching i usually delete it anyway.
My country sucks a bit as the things i'm interested in (Manga and anime) are not widely available. I'll have to order it in from america or europe. I'm sorry, but i'm not gonna order something in and find out it's shitty. I'm not made of money.

I have a habit of illegally downloading music, deciding whether I like it or not, and from there going out and buying the actual thing.
TediousTLP Featured By Owner Jan 26, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Yes I do and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

CDs and DVDs are RIDICULOUSLY priced in my area. I just can't justify spending $40.00 on a CD. That's half a weeks food budget!

I do, however, support my local DVD Store and rent DVDs from them and then burn them if I like them ;D

I even have a shirt with a jolly roger on it that says "MUSIC PIRATE" in big bold letters.
The only time I follow the law is when it happens to coincide with what I'm going to do anyway.

I used to download a lot. And watch bootleg movies. I've stopped pretty much though; just realized it was a) usually terrible quality and a) "oh... it's illegal?"

I still download a song if I really, /really, must have it (even then... been some months at this point) and can't find it anywhere. I keep an eye out for the cds, still.

Yes I have. I belive that most of the bands i lithesn will not suffer a lot if some person in a small country do not bytheir album. Same goes for games and softwear and movies (that in any other way, i'll never see)
If the internet "piracy" would hurt enny of these big companies it would have shown for all thease years. They have they way of making money, don't think they are stupid.
This is the new era, and they cannot stop it, they should use to it.
Internet is aplace for information. Thease thing are in some way information.
And a normal person doesen't have money for, say... photoshop. So they don't have one is that it? How manny good artist would never existed in that way? So only the rich will learn is that it? Let's put one huge price on wikipedia too, then.
And as for the music - How manny people would never here some bands if it was not the internet? to find a metal album here in Bulgaria is not the easyest thing, to by it without hearing all of the songs some times - Inpossible! I Gave Behemoth's Evangelyon to my Boyfreind for his bithday, but it's woth the mony and i know it! So is it to bad only to by albums you know are good, and see movies that you know are woth seeing?
I don't see mycrosoft suffer from all the pirate windollses out there. Oh poor mr. Gates... Doesen't have a monny to buy a plane :( I who don't have a mony for my rent, feeal so bad for him :(
:D :D :D
Blizzard found their way to use internet and still not to hurt people who don't want to pay for shit.
If you buy WOW you play in the oficial server.
Not that if you don't buy the game, you cannot play in a pirate one...
You can do it, see the historry and still be a fan, right? But off course pirete servers sux waay more than the oficiall one.
and you know it. You download the game, try it, and if you like it - you by, and pay in a way better place :D if don't... well it is not your type of a game.
Easy right?
If blizzard can figure out something, Everyone can. Don't blame the people, that they don't want to screw themselfs!

(Go on SOPA censor me! I will be right even if you do)

Sorry for my bad english. I whish Deviantart hed an edit button..

I don't do it "anymore". I've copied down songs from Youtube (soundtrack for an anime), but that's all I have now. Else I buy CD's, games or movies, because I like having them physically. So only did it with songs, never movies.
Nani-Mizu Featured By Owner Jan 26, 2012

Same for me :/
I listen to lots of JRock music I hear in anime but Musica don't sell Japanese music or any other language but english ... and maybe Rammstein. I even asked them if they could import it for me and they said that if it's not on their list, they can't ...

Yes, and I will continue (unless SOPA/PIPA/ACTA/Whateverthenewoneiscalled eventually get passed...).

HOWEVER, I only torrent anime and occasionally games... And with anime, I usually end up buying it if I like it enough/if it comes to America... They're not losing money to us Americans when we download an anime that isn't in America yet... .-. Just sayin'. I can't remember the last time I torrented a movie, though...
Just anime...

Only because it's Asian music, and I can't buy it on iTunes. Other than that, nope, I buy all my music legally (:
Hitokiri-Zanshin Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2012  Student Filmographer
Mostly music, some pics and manga...but i see no difference in doing that and borrowing from a friend. My friend lends me manga all the time, I read entire series without buying a copy. Borrowing books is also similar. The library does tons of "sharing". I don't see what their big problem is. I can see more of their point when it comes to movies and music. But most musicians don't even care. It's the record companies that care.

Chips13 Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2012
I downloaded free antivirus... and music... and sometimes videos... I didn't pay for the latter two, obviously. And pictures... I collect pictures I like on the Internet and delete them when they're taking too much space.

For manga... I read online for those which aren't available in my place. If they're available, I buy them. Like my Detective Conan manga, I've collected up until volume 72.

I don't download stuff a lot, mostly because I don't want to clutter up my computer.

Well at that time it wasnt and there were other things but its not something i can brag about.
VisualSpiff Featured By Owner Jan 25, 2012
Technically, but I don't think of it as being illegal, because I'm technically only downloading the things I've payed for.

If I have at some point bought an album and lost it (like once my cd case was in a house that burned down) or if I lose a disc to a game I previously owned or it gets damaged and stops working, I'll find an illegal download somewhere. Since I technically payed for and own it I don't see anything wrong with downloading it just because I lost track of something or it doesn't work anymore.

I hate saying it, but yes, I do download music illegally. If it is an artist I really respect and want them to get my money, I pay for it, but other wise, no. I download it and I dont like it, but I obviously don't dislike it enough to stop
Kittyhawk58 Featured By Owner Jan 24, 2012  Student
I think that they NEED to stop those two bills from being passed, because if they don't, the internet will essentially be shut down. Hollywood can suck it up, because MegaVideo and MediaFire and YouTube and WikiPedia are the best things that ever happened to the internet - and they'll all be shut down if these bills pass. Sure, pirating is bad, but censorship is that much worse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it's like, watching NCIS episodes on YouTube everyone once and a while isn't that bad, or downloading some obscure Japanese song that will never be released in the US, or clicking on a link from WikiPedia, or watching Titanic on MegaVideo because it isn't on instant on Netflix - none of that is that bad! It's completely different if I pirate a movie and go around making profit from it!

I have a 'try before you buy' attitude. I download it off a torrent site or similar, and if I like it,I buy a legal copy, even if I won't be using it anymore.

Example: I download ebooks sometimes. If I like the book,I will actually go and buy it, even if I finished reading it.
Whetsit-Tuya Featured By Owner Sep 22, 2013  Student Filmographer
That's corny, but although it's technically Illegal no one can go to jail for it, on :iconegoraptor:'s livestream he said he pirates games and goes out and buys the copies to the ones he liked

I try to purchase things legally, but MANY times digital material is "not available in your area" so since they have no interest in selling, I download.

i buy anything i can buy, but with music there are some extremely unique songs out there that are impossible to buy! i do buy songs that i can but its easier than ordering cds overseas... plus im constantly broke...
Yakubi-chan Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2012
The only pirate two kind of stuff:
1. Things that the owners are no longer making any profit off of. i.e. games so old the original consoles for them have turned to dust. XP
2. Ridiculously expensive stuff, usually imports that will never make it to the states. Mostly music in my case.
So, I don't feel too bad about what I do get 'illegally'.
I have all the american releases of D.Gray-Man on DVD, but seeing as the release has now been put on haitus, I downloaded the episodes that I don't have. I have the full intention to buy the rest of the series if it ever comes out state side. I also read manga online, but if I like it enough I buy it.
Basically, as long as you aren't ripping people off I don't see much of a problem with that kind of piracy.

I do watch anime online but on legit websites when available, then I buy whatever I was watching when it comes out in English if I really liked it. Other than that, I never really did anything. Got to support the creators so they can make new stuff.
Evilchikadee Featured By Owner Jan 23, 2012  Student Digital Artist
I've illegally downloaded a lot of music... 'Cause I has no moneys... And all my Japanese music is illegally downloaded, 'cause I can't find it on iTunes or anything~

If watching anime and reading manga online counts, I'm definitely a criminal there, although I justify it since it's hard to find in book form for less than like 9 dollars apiece. If I wanted to legally read all of, say, Bleach up 'till now, I'd give up pretty quick. And as for anime, it's not even really sold here except for in specialized stores and on teh interwebz xD

But it's kind of amusing to know just how many people pirate stuff nowadays, according to these results. There's an awful lot of pirates out there, apparently!
